Artificial Disc Replacement Surgery

Gentle and Effective Treatment for Damaged Spinal Discs

Artificial disc replacement (ADR) is a minimally invasive spinal surgery. Its purpose is to restore mobility and decrease pain caused by spinal disc injury or degradation. Spinal discs are supporting structures located between each spinal vertebra. They consist of a fibrous outer layer and a gelatinous inner layer. Spinal discs help cushion the spine and prevent the vertebrae from rubbing directly against each other. Unfortunately, discs can wear down or become pinched or damaged with time. They can also become injured as a result of sports, heavy exercise, or accidents.

The spine specialists here at Total Spine Institute frequently perform artificial disc replacement surgery. Whenever possible, we use non-invasive treatments to address back pain and injuries. When those don’t successfully reduce unwanted symptoms, we’ll often recommend progressing to the next level of treatment. Artificial disc replacement is a minimally invasive surgery. It’s less risky and painful than traditional open surgery. Call us at (818) 616-4429 to schedule a consultation in Northern California, Southern California and Arizona.

What Is Artificial Disc Replacement Surgery?

ADR surgery involves removing a damaged spinal disc and putting an artificial one in its place. We often recommend this surgery when a patient experiences significant pain or loss of motion from one or more damaged discs. Artificial disc replacement surgery is a revolutionary alternative to spinal fusion. Unlike spinal fusion, artificial disc replacement doesn’t limit range of motion. In fact, it often restores spinal mobility while reducing back pain.

Why Would You Need Artificial Disc Replacement Surgery?

You might want to consider ADR surgery if you have back or neck pain caused by an injured or degenerated disc. Surgery may also be a good option if you’ve tried nonsurgical treatments without satisfactory results.

If you’re still not sure whether spinal surgery is right for you, we’d love to meet with you and perform an evaluation. We’ll analyze your spinal injuries and symptoms, review your medical history, and then let you know what treatment(s) we recommend.

What Does Artificial Disc Replacement Surgery Involve?

It’s pretty common for patients to fear the unknown. That’s why Total Spine Institute always goes to great lengths to explain how each procedure works before beginning treatment.

Here’s a brief overview of the artificial disc replacement process:

Consultation

When you meet with us for your consultation, we’ll go into greater detail and answer all your procedure-related questions.

Damaged Disc Removal

The first part of ADR surgery involves removing the damaged disc and vertebral bone. Then, we prep the area for placement of the artificial disc by modifying adjacent vertebral bones as needed. This is to make sure the artificial disc fits well into the intended area.

Artificial Disc Placement

Finally, we place the artificial disc into the area where the damaged disc once was. After ensuring the prosthetic disc aligns precisely with the rest of the vertebrae, we carefully close the incision site. This is an outpatient procedure, so you can return home within hours of your surgery. Just make sure you have someone with you who can drive you home.

After Surgery

Some patients may need a few days, while others need up to 5 weeks of downtime to recover from artificial disc replacement. In some cases, full recovery may take up to three months. It depends on the patient. We’ll give you post-operative instructions to help you heal as quickly as possible after your surgery.

Artificial Disc Replacement FAQs

Some patients may not be good candidates for artificial disc replacement, including those with scoliosis and other spine deformities. Additionally, people with facet joint syndrome may not be able to receive this treatment. If you have any questions about whether you’re a good candidate, please schedule a consultation with us.

An artificial disc replacement usually lasts for at least 10 years or more. Hip or knee replacements may need retreatment after 15 years or so.

The cost of ADR varies based on the extent of your health insurance coverage, the fees for the surgeon and anesthesiologist, and the operating room time. We recommend contacting your insurance company and scheduling a consultation with us to receive a personalized price estimate.
