Targeted Solutions to Relieve Degenerative Disc Pain and Restore Function
Degenerative disc disease is something that many people develop as they age, and it is often caused by or made worse by trauma. It affects the spinal discs and can cause mild to significant pain in the arms, weakness, tingling, and neck and back pain. Degenerative disc disease most commonly affects the cervical spine (neck) and the lumbar spine (lower back), which can lead to symptoms that radiate from the neck into the arms and from the lower back into the legs. These are the areas of the spine that undergo the most movement from day to day.

What is Degenerative Disc Disease?
Degenerative disc disease occurs when the discs located between your vertebrae begin to break down and wear out. There are two types of degenerative disc disease: Cervical and lumbar. The former happens in the cervical spine, which includes the vertebrae in the neck. The latter impacts the lumbar spine in the lower back. Degenerative disc disease can cause pain during movements like walking and looking around. In some cases, the disease can impact both the lumbar and cervical vertebrae at once.
Symptoms of Degenerative Disc Disease
Symptoms of degenerative disc disease can vary based on the location of the weak or damaged disc. However, some common symptoms of the condition include:
- Chronic pain that primarily affects the lower back or neck
- Tingling or numbness in the legs and arms
- Pain that radiates from the back to the thighs or buttocks
- Pain that becomes worse during or after sitting, twisting, bending, or lifting
How Is Degenerative Disc Disease Treated?
There is currently no known cure for degenerative disc disease. However, Total Spine Institute offers a variety of treatments that can help with pain and symptom management. Surgery is rarely required for degenerative disc disease. We most commonly offer the following non-surgical treatment options:
- Anti-inflammatory medication
- Epidural steroid injections
- Physical therapy
- Platelet-rich plasma (PRP) injections
- Nerve blocks
- Surgery
If you have secondary spinal complications, we may recommend surgery. We offer multiple minimally invasive surgeries. They include discectomy and fusion, artificial disc replacement, spinal decompression, and microdiscectomy.
Degenerative disc disease can cause inflammation between the vertebrae. This, in turn, can lead to radiating pain. We often prescribe anti-inflammatory medications to relieve discomfort. Many patients find that anti-inflammatory meds are all they need to manage their symptoms and lead a normal life.
Epidural steroid injections can control pain and relieve inflammation around the spine. We inject them into the epidural space, which surrounds the spinal cord and is filled with fluid. The pain-relieving effects of these injections can last six months or longer.
Physical Therapy
Physical therapy utilizes various exercises and techniques to improve mobility and reduce pain. To treat degenerative disc disease, we may utilize floor exercises, spinal stabilization, and specialized stretches. We often combine physical therapy with anti-inflammatory medication for optimal results.
Platelet-rich plasma shows promising results in treating degenerative disc disease. It’s prepared by putting a blood sample through a centrifuge until the plasma and platelets separate from the rest of the blood cells. Then, a provider injects the platelet-rich plasma into the area impacted by degenerative disc disease. The injection stimulates increased secretion of cytokines and growth factors. These help to alleviate symptoms and improve spinal health.
Nerve Blocks
Sometimes, degenerative disc disease can result in a pinched nerve. We may recommend one or more nerve blocks to manage the resulting pain. As the name suggests, nerve block injections prevent specific nerves from sending pain signals and may provide relief for up to a few weeks.
