Minimally Invasive Spine Surgery
Precise, Less Invasive Spine Surgery for Faster Recovery
The spine carries a lot of weight from day to day and is constantly under immense pressure. Therefore, it’s not surprising that up to 85% of Americans will experience back injuries and pain during their lifetime. In mild cases of back injury or pain, the affected person may simply need rest to fully recover. In other cases, back conditions may be more serious and require surgery.

What Is Minimally Invasive Spine Surgery?
The thought of undergoing back surgery can be scary, especially if you’re envisioning a highly invasive procedure. Fortunately, technology has come a long way in recent years. Now, there’s often a minimally invasive solution available for most back ailments.
Minimally invasive spine surgery is any type of surgical procedure that is less invasive than traditional surgery. The incisions are smaller, which means they cause less trauma to the tissues. At Total Spine Institute, we try to offer minimally invasive spine surgery over open surgery whenever possible.
What Advantages Does Minimally Invasive Spine Surgery Offer?
Open back surgery still has its place and may be necessary in some situations. However, whenever minimally invasive surgery is a legitimate option, it offers the following advantages:
- Less blood loss
- Lower infection risk
- Much less postoperative pain
- Minimal scarring
- Faster recovery
- Lower risk of becoming reliant on prescription pain relievers
Depending on the cause and severity of your ongoing spinal issues, we may recommend minimally invasive surgery. However, not all patients are good candidates for these procedures. We’ll consult with you before scheduling your appointment to ensure you qualify for minimally invasive spine surgery.
What Conditions Can Minimally Invasive Spine Surgery Treat?
Minimally invasive spine surgery is versatile. Therefore, it can treat many different spinal conditions, including:
- Spinal stenosis
- Back instability
- Degenerative disc disease
- Herniated discs
- Spondylolisthesis (slipped vertebrae)
- Radiculopathy (when one or more spinal nerves get pinched)
What Does Minimally Invasive Spine Surgery Involve?
As with open surgery, you’ll be put to sleep during minimally invasive spinal surgery. Before performing the operation, your surgeon will place tubular retractors into one or multiple small incisions. The retractors create channels to the targeted areas of the spine.
Your surgeon inserts a microscope and other small surgical tools through the incision sites and uses them to perform the surgery. Afterward, the surgeon closes the incision site with surgical glue and sutures.
The total length of your operation depends on the specific treatment you’re receiving. During your consultation, we’ll give you more details regarding your particular surgery. You’ll need to arrange for someone to drive you home after your treatment.
