What Are Pain Injections?

Pain injections are treatments we utilize to temporarily relieve pain from a variety of causes. They include two common types: steroid injections and nerve blocks. Here’s what to know about each option:

Steroid Injections

Steroids are powerful anti-inflammatory drugs that can relieve pain in targeted areas. They’re also commonly referred to as cortisone shots. Steroid injections contain corticosteroids that calm the immune system and reduce inflammation.

Nerve Blocks

Nerve block pain injections contain a local anesthetic and provide temporary pain relief when injected close to a targeted nerve. Like steroid injections, nerve blocks can relieve inflammation and may facilitate healing. They also block specific nerves from registering pain signals and can help diagnose the source of pain.

What Conditions Can Pain Injections Treat?

Pain injections can treat a wide variety of spinal conditions, including:

  • Spondylolisthesis
  • Osteoarthritis
  • Bulging/herniated discs
  • Degenerative disc disease
  • Radiculopathy (compressed or pinched spinal nerves)
  • Rheumatoid arthritis
  • Spinal stenosis
  • Joint or tendon injuries such as shoulder, elbow, hip or knee pain
  • Nerve Injuries or neuropathic pain sources

Total Spine Institute only recommends pain injections after more conservative approaches fail to provide lasting pain relief. When oral medication and physical therapy don’t successfully alleviate back or neck pain, we typically use pain injections as the next step in the treatment process.

What Area of The Body Does a Pain Injection Target?

The administration location for pain injections depends on the type of injection you’re receiving and the location of your pain. Here are some of the different types of injections and where they’re typically administered:

Sacroiliac Joint Injections

The sacroiliac joint is at the bottom of the spine, where the sacrum and pelvic bones meet. It’s common for this area to develop pain in response to arthritis or injuries. Pain injections delivered directly into the joint may relieve pain and restore some flexibility.

Epidural Steroid Injections

Epidural steroid injections target the small epidural space around the spinal canal. They can relieve pain and reduce local inflammation.

Facet Joint Injections

The facet joints link the vertebrae together. Facet joint syndrome, arthritis, and other conditions can cause pain in these small joints. Precise placement of pain injections can help relieve this discomfort.

What to Expect When Receiving Pain Injections

If you’re nervous about the prospect of receiving injections near your spine, you’re not alone. Most patients experience some degree of treatment anxiety, especially if they’ve never received pain injections before. To help you have the most comfortable, stress-free experience possible, here’s what to expect from your appointment:

Consultation

Before beginning treatment, we’ll meet with you for a detailed consultation. We’ll ask questions about your medical history and your pain. We’ll also invite you to ask us any questions about your upcoming injections. We want to make sure you fully understand what to expect during and after treatment.

Injection

When you’re ready, we’ll lead you to your private treatment area for your pain injections. We’ll apply a topical numbing agent beforehand to numb your skin and keep you as comfortable as possible. Then, we’ll deliver the injections using ultrasound imaging for the most precise placement. Your entire appointment should take about 20 minutes.

Follow-Up and Aftercare

After your treatment, we’ll give you aftercare instructions to manage any discomfort you may feel. You’ll have minimal downtime and should be able to resume regular (non-strenuous) activities within hours of your appointment. We recommend waiting at least 24 hours before driving or engaging in any type of physically strenuous activity.

Pain Injections FAQs

Pain injections can be uncomfortable, but we numb the skin beforehand to minimize discomfort. You might feel a burning or stinging sensation during the injections, but these should dissipate quickly.

Pain relief from your injections may last anywhere from several months, depending on the individual and the type of injection.

Common side effects of pain injections include headaches, mild soreness at the injection site, nausea, or dizziness. More serious side effects are rare but may include fever, severe headache, sudden incontinence, or weakness or numbness in the legs. If these symptoms occur, contact your healthcare provider immediately.

The number of pain injections we recommend depends on the severity and underlying cause of your pain. We may recommend a series of injections depending on each patient’s pain management needs.
