Most people experience back or neck pain at some point in their lifetime. In many cases, the pain comes from minor injuries or inflammation and may be relatively mild. In other cases, spinal pain may be severe and long-lasting. In the latter case, patients may need professional pain management services to help them get by.

What Conditions Require Pain Management?
Many different health conditions may benefit from pain management services. We frequently provide personalized pain management programs to people with:
- Scoliosis
- Sacroiliitis
- Spinal stenosis
- Degenerative disc disease
- Failed back surgery syndrome
- Radiculopathy
- Spondylolisthesis
- Herniated discs
- Joint pains
- Head or facial pain
- Nerve pain
All of these conditions can cause significant discomfort on a day-to-day basis. Pain management, especially when combined with treatments that correct the root of the problem, can make a huge difference in people’s lives.
What Are Pain Management Treatment Options at Total Spine Institute?
We offer a wide variety of pain management treatments at Total Spine Institute. Here are some of our most notable:
Anti-Inflammatory Medications
Anti-inflammatory medications are frequently recommended for sufferers of chronic pain. They reduce discomfort by blocking an enzyme called cyclooxygenase. This enzyme produces prostaglandins, which are chemicals in the body that can cause pain and inflammation. We often recommend physical therapy in combination with anti-inflammatory medications.
Physical Therapy
Physical therapy is a broad category of treatments intended to improve mobility, decrease pain, and support health. It’s often prescribed after an injury, health condition, or surgery to facilitate optimal recovery. In many cases, physical therapy can reduce chronic pain by improving flexibility, strengthening supporting muscles, and reducing inflammation.
Epidural Steroid Injections
Epidural steroid injections (ESIs) temporarily reduce pain by delivering anti-inflammatory medication into the epidural space. This is the space that surrounds the spine.
Nerve Blocks
Like steroid injections, nerve block injections also temporarily reduce pain levels. They contain a local anesthetic for rapid pain relief. We frequently recommend nerve blocks for acute pain. The effects usually last between 24 and 72 hours.
Platelet-Rich Plasma Injections
Facet Joint Injections
Facet joints connect the spinal vertebrae to each other. When these joints become stiff and inflamed, it’s known as facet joint syndrome. Facet joint injections can relieve discomfort from this condition.

Pain Management FAQs
If My Back Hurts, Should I Limit My Movements?
If you have back pain, you should temporarily limit certain stressful movements. However, you don’t want to become completely sedentary unless a healthcare professional advises you to do so. Generally, you should engage in slow, easy movements and avoid anything that strains your back while you heal.
Will Back Pain Go Away On Its Own?
Back pain sometimes resolves on its own, especially if it is caused by a minor injury or inflammation. However, more complex spinal problems may require advanced treatments and comprehensive pain management approaches.
Who Is a Candidate for Pain Management Treatments?
If you have acute or chronic back pain that doesn’t respond to over-the-counter pain medications, you may qualify for pain management treatments. Schedule a consultation with Total Spine Institute, and we’ll give you personalized treatment recommendations after a comprehensive consultation.
