What Is PRP?
Platelet-rich plasma is a therapeutic substance derived from the blood. It’s composed of two elements: platelets and plasma. Platelets are a specific type of blood cell, and plasma is the liquid part of the blood. To separate PRP from the blood, providers use a centrifuge to spin the patient’s blood sample. The centrifuge rapidly spins to separate the platelet-rich plasma from the other blood components.
The process of collecting, preparing, and delivering PRP injections involves these primary steps:
- Extraction: A qualified technician extracts a small blood sample from the patient’s body.
- Centrifuging: After extraction, the blood goes into a centrifuge. The centrifuge spins rapidly, separating the platelets and plasma from the other blood cells.
- Processing: After centrifuging, the PRP goes through a process that involves mixing the platelets with an anticoagulant. This helps prevent unwanted blood clotting.
- Injection: A provider injects the prepared and processed PRP into the patient’s injury site. Total Spine Institute uses ultrasound imaging to facilitate precise injection placement.
The entire PRP treatment process usually takes about an hour. You can return home immediately after your procedure without any downtime. After the injection, your body will immediately begin healing itself, and you may feel a rapid decrease in pain.
How Does PRP Work?
PRP treatment works by isolating plasma and platelets from the blood into concentrated amounts. Then, a skilled provider injects the PRP directly into the desired treatment area. PRP delivers as many as 10 times the normal number of platelets to the injection site, helping augment the body’s natural healing process.
The PRP preparation process involves activating platelets so they release healing proteins. These proteins trigger injury repairs and can heal damaged blood vessels, cartilage, and soft tissue. Athletes commonly undergo PRP treatment to quickly recover from injuries such as Achilles tendonitis, tennis elbow, and other muscle or ligament injuries.
When Might You Need PRP Injections?
It’s not natural to experience ongoing joint, tendon, or spinal pain. Even if you’ve lived with discomfort most of your life, that doesn’t mean you have to live the rest of your life that way. If you have pain that doesn’t respond to massages, chiropractic adjustments, or other treatments, PRP injections may be a good next step for you to take. Consult with the team here at Total Spine Institutes to learn more about this remarkable treatment and how it boosts your body’s innate healing abilities.

PRP FAQS
Can PRP Regenerate Cartilage?
Yes, PRP has the potential to promote cartilage cell regeneration. This can be especially helpful in cases of rheumatoid arthritis and osteoarthritis.
Is Platelet-Rich Plasma Safe?
PRP is generally considered safe and has a low risk of side effects or allergic reactions because it’s composed of your body’s own cells. However, it does still carry a minimal risk of side effects like infection, tissue damage, nerve injuries, and excessive bleeding.
How Long Do PRP Injections Last?
The positive, healing effects of PRP injections can last from nine months to a year. Often, patients may need two or more injections for optimal pain relief. In most cases, providers recommend spacing injections apart by up to six weeks.
Do PRP Injections Hurt?
PRP injections are less painful than some other treatments for musculoskeletal or spinal pain. However, patients may experience some initial discomfort during the injections. We use ultrasound technology to guide our injections, minimizing procedural discomfort precisely.
