Sciatica Treatment
Customized Sciatica Treatments for Fast, Lasting Relief
Sciatica is a common condition that may impact up to 40% of Americans at some point in their lifetime. People younger than age 20 rarely experience sciatica unless they experience some type of spinal injury. Sciatica can be a debilitating condition because it causes intense, sudden pain with certain movements. Fortunately, minimally invasive sciatica treatment is available.

What Is Sciatica?
Sciatica is a painful condition caused by compression, irritation, or damage to the sciatic nerve. The sciatic nerve extends from the lower back down the back of each leg. Besides stabbing pain, sciatica can also cause tingling and numbness in the buttocks and lower back on the affected side.
Sciatica isn’t life-threatening, but it can hamper mobility because of the intense pain it causes. It often goes away on its own with sufficient rest, stretching, and other self-care treatments. However, if the underlying cause of the condition isn’t addressed, sciatica could recur and become a chronic health condition.
What Are the Symptoms of Sciatica?
Sciatica can cause a variety of unpleasant symptoms. These commonly include:
- Sharp, burning pain that often becomes worse while walking, coughing, or sitting for long periods
- Tingling, numbness, or muscle weakness on the affected side
- Pain that extends from the lower back or buttocks down the back of the leg
Common Causes of Sciatica
Many spinal conditions can potentially lead to sciatica. Some common causes include:
- Trauma
- Overgrowth of bone on the spine (sometimes called bone spurs)
- Herniated disc
- Osteoarthritis
- Cysts or other growths on or near the spine
- Spinal stenosis
- Spondylolisthesis
- Degenerative disc disease
- Pregnancy
- Excess weight
- Injuries
Sciatica Treatment Options
At Total Spine Institute, we offer a comprehensive portfolio of treatment options for sciatica. We often recommend starting with the least invasive option where appropriate. We may also recommend combining multiple treatments for the best results, depending on the underlying cause of your pain. Here are some of the leading-edge treatments we offer:
Ultrasound-guided steroid and anesthetic injections can relieve inflammation and pain caused by sciatica. These injections are quite popular because they’re minimally invasive and highly effective. They typically contain a local anesthetic and a corticosteroid medication. Since they’re guided by ultrasound, these injections allow for a high degree of precision and have a low risk of erroneous placement or complications. Pain relief from these injections can last as long as six months.

Sciatica FAQs
Will Sciatica Go Away on Its Own?
Sciatica may go away on its own after a period of weeks. However, chronic or recurring sciatica often requires treatment.
How Can I Tell if My Pain Is Sciatica?
Sciatica typically feels like stabbing, burning, or shooting pain. It often begins in the lower back and may extend down the buttocks and back of one or both legs. If you experience pain along your lower leg while lying down on a bed and having someone lift your leg straight up, you may have sciatica.
When Should I See a Doctor for Sciatica?
You may need to see a spinal care physician for sciatica if your symptoms are severe or last longer than a week. You should also schedule an appointment if you develop sudden numbness or muscle weakness in your lower back or leg.
