Spinal Stenosis FAQs
What Are the Risks of Untreated Spinal Stenosis?
Unlike some types of back or neck pain, spinal stenosis doesn’t go away if left untreated. Instead, symptoms often continue to worsen, eventually leading to debilitating pain and immobility. Rarely, untreated spinal stenosis can lead to total loss of bladder and/or bowel control.
Can Physical Therapy Help Spinal Stenosis?
Yes, physical therapy can often reduce symptoms associated with spinal stenosis. It can improve muscle strength and flexibility while decreasing spinal canal compression. Physical therapy may be most effective during the early stages of the condition. However, it may also have a positive impact on spinal pain in later stages of spinal stenosis when combined with other treatments.
Is Surgery Necessary for Spinal Stenosis?
In some cases, surgery may be necessary for advanced spinal stenosis. However, the providers at Total Spine Institute will always favor noninvasive treatments first. If those treatments fail to provide satisfactory outcomes, we may recommend surgery.
